Here, you’ve received a bouquet of flowers, or bought them for yourself. They definitely brighten up your living space, but you’re now left with a problem —how are you going to take care of these flowers? Fresh flowers generally don’t last very long, and it can be unpleasant when they start dropping exactly a day after you put them in a vase. Different types of flowers require different care, let us guide you through this flower-care journey with 6 general tips to help extend the life of your flowers:
  1. Add water and check it’s water level daily
Adding a sufficient amount of water to your flower vase is the best way to keep the arrangement long-lasting and fresh. Some types of cut flowers require more water than others, so be sure to check the water level daily and add whenever necessary!
  1. Filtered water is preferable
Tap water is normally good enough for your flowers, but we like to go with filtered water! It helps avoid any bacteria affecting the lifespan of the cut flowers. However, feeding them overly “expensive” water such as Acqua Panna is not required.
  1. Recut the bottom of the stems
Cutting the bottom of the stems allow the flowers to drink up as much water as possible. Trim the bottoms daily, especially when you switch out the water in the vase. Once a flower is out of the water for awhile, the stem tends to dry and needs to be recut in order to take in water. To get the ideal cut, use sharp scissors and cut the end-most inch off the stems at an angle instead of straight across.
  1. Make your own concoction
Combine Water with sugar, lemon or lime juice and liquid bleach as a DIY fertiliser. There three ingredients will help keep their stems open, nourish your flowers and kill bacteria that could prematurely age them.
  1. Sterilise the vase
When it comes to any kind of plants, cleanliness matters. A clean and sterilised vase filled with fresh water is the ideal way to take care of your flowers. Before putting them in the vase, you should clean the vase with bleach and water. Regular soap and water works too, but using bleach is the better choice.
  1. Choose where to put it wisely
If flowers are placed in an area that’s too warm, they’ll droop a lot faster. The best method is to keep your arrangements in a cool breezy environment, away from direct sunlight, heater vents, and entry doors.
